Tech Tip
TECH TIP NO.: TT37.002
PRODUCT: Series 37 EZ-Flex 80486 CPU Card
REVISION: C
FREQUENCY: 50 MHz
DATE: 3/18/93
ORIGINATOR: Mohan Nair
RELEASED BY: Documentation Control
SUBJECT: CPU Oscillator Lock-Up Problem and PAL TI
20L8-5 Problem
1. The earlier versions of the 50 MHz Intel CPU on the Series 37 have
experienced an oscillator lock-up problem on power off-on sequence at high
temperatures.
The version of the Intel CPU which should be used on the board is the
cC0-stepping 486DX 50 MHz CPU. This version can be identified by one of the
following numbers stamped on the CPU: SX705, SX710, or Q302.
2. A problem has been experienced with TI 20L8-5 24 Pin DIP PALs. They
are very unreliable at high temperatures. The symptoms of the problem are that
the system hangs under ACAD/WINDOWS/UNIX/OS2.
But with the AMD 20L8-5 24 Pin DIP PALs, none of these problems were observed .
Consequently, for all Series-37, Rev-C, 50 MHz, only AMD 20L8-5 should be used
at location U19 (H03F3702).
RMA and Tech Support personnel need to be aware of these problems. The CPU
version and the make of the PAL at location U19 should be checked.
